This will be my very first time to attend Data Council (and second time in Austin city. Our team attended Current 2022, which was just amazing).

I will post daily this week to share my experience at Data Council Austin 2023. For those who cannot make it, hopefully this series can help you catch up for what is happening in the conference, and various parties..

First off, what is Data Council? You may read this “definitive guide” from the founder.

But maybe this tweet just explains everything.

“Spring Break for Data Geeks” must be an over-simplified way to describe it. But so true. It happens around kids’ spring break (well, my kid’s spring break just ends yesterday 😂) There are so many conferences for data engineers, data scientists, analysts.. We just want to learn something new, meet someone interesting, and seek for something promising. And of course, lots of coffees ☕ and beers 🍺 🍻, and BBQ 🍖

So, here I am. Austin. Data Council.

I hop on the taxi at 6am. Leaving Vancouver at 9 and will arrive Austin around 5pm. Then join the Happy Hour right after hotel check-in, and maybe edit this blog a bit to share my experience at the party.

Stay tune for the day-1 blog.

/* Updated on 10pm Austin local time */

I enjoyed the window view on the flights. Denver is full of snow and Austin is so green.

I immediately turned to t-shirt mode when I arrived the Austin airport. Exchanged the best BBQ restaurant with my Uber driver and checked in the hotel. 5 minutes later I was on a Lime e-scooter heading to the first party of this week: Happy Hour sponsored by Brooklyn Data • HEX • Dagster • Hightouch • Airbyte

Wow, what a great party. Very nice local beer and wine. More data geeks. I didn’t take photos for the party but really enjoyed the conversations with all familar faces and vendors, including but not limited to:

  • Paul Dudley, cofounder of streamkap, based in London.
  • A few airbyte BD/marketing persons and complained a little bit of the wait of my new connector PR waiting time. But don’t get me wrong. I admired the airbyte community. The experience to build and test a new (Python) based Airbyte connector is just amazing.
  • I got to new a few folks from Event Store. The company was founded in 2012, 11 years ago and very interesting approach for event source repo and change data capture.
  • Good converstations with a few VC and other startups.
  • I am lucky enough to get the tshirt for Brooklyn Data Co. Not one, two!

If you don’t know about Brooklyn Data Co, it’s fine. If you work on SQL or database, be sure to check out https://github.com/brooklyn-data/co/blob/main/sql_style_guide.md

I started to realize I shouldn’t have packed any tshirt in my bag. I may collect dozens of t-shirt in this week.

Well, it’s the day-0 of Data Council. I haven’t get my badge yet and haven’t checked out the booths or attend any speaker sessions. More exciting and fun things ahead. Stay tune for the day-1 updates.

May the power of data with you!

EDIT on 12:36am on Day 2, please check the Day-1 summary

It will be a chain. So if you want to read Day-2, you can get the link in Day-1. So on. I don’t expect to edit this blog any more, even there are typo or grammar errors. No matter human or AI should be able to understand it 😂
