Agreed, it's not common to set the Kafka retention policy to half year or multiple years. Our team is working timeplus.com, an unified system to build a true distributed (streaming) database. We can load data from Kafka and save them in our own unified storage(some will be in stream store, some in historical data), and run SQL to query both live data and historical data.
